How long have you been in the industry? 

Commenced working at Commonwealth Bank in September 2006. So 12 years in Banking & Finance.

What were you doing before this job and how did you get this gig?

I worked at Mortgage Choice in Melbourne CBD, by simply applying online. I was lucky enough to be interviewed by an ex CBA employee at the time who saw the potential in me.

Knowing Sylvia MacFarlaine through Mortgage Choice, she introduced me to Murray Lees to consider career options at OHL.

Define your job in one word: 


What were your real and cliché expectations of working in the industry?

I’ve been in the Banking & Finance industry for over 12 years, so my expectations aren’t all that new to me anymore. However, over the years, the industry has certainly changed and advanced for the better. From the changes in the digital world to the Royal Commission inquiries to seeing changes within the property market.

How would you describe what the company does and what does your role involve?

OHL specialises in Financial Service products, which is initially led by AI as the focal point, and then for the AI to know when a human interaction is required to step in and assist the client.

My initial role, simply put is to write the loans, and make sure the company grows.

Best thing about the industry you work in:

The satisfaction and accomplishment of knowing I was able to assist a customer, whether it be with purchasing their first home or purchasing a 5th investment property for the veteran investor. Customer satisfaction is key. Make the customer happy and the rest will work itself out.

What’s exciting you about the industry right now? 

I love how the industry itself is becoming heavily reliant around the digital world and AI. Whether it be easy or complex applications they can all be completed and submitted via an online portal, and have a seamless, efficient and time saving end to end process.

Where do you turn for inspiration?

Mentors – especially the ones that have created something from nothing and persevered on to reach the goal that they aimed for.

Me time at the gym. A good 1-2 hour workout, can completely turn my motivation and inspire me to be a better version of myself.

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?

I have a strange obsession with doing the laundry and actually enjoy doing it. Very sad, I must admit.

What’s your personal motto?

Train the mind, and the body will follow.

I got into broking because:

My background is commercial and business lending. I merely wanted a simpler version of dealing with clients, whilst writing somewhat easier loans, compared to the usual 30+ page commercial credit memo loan, which would take up my whole day.

I was always going to move into residential lending, it was just a matter of when.

If I weren’t doing this for a living, I’d be:

Either a journalist or a photojournalist.
